Kylie Jean, Spelling Queen follows Texas second grader, Kylie Jean Carter, on her journey to win her school’s spelling bee.  It is her first time ever participating in a bee and she couldn’t be more excited.  Kylie Jean gets help with her spelling words from her dog, Ugly Brother, who lets her know if she got each word right—by barking twice—or wrong—by barking once.  Kylie Jean also gets help from her neighbor, Miss Clarabelle, while helping her weed her garden.  Miss. Clarabelle calls out words for Kylie Jean to spell.  Kylie Jean’s mother also helps her in her quest to be the spelling bee winner by letting her be a “grocery store speller”.  Mrs. Carter calls out words in the grocery store for Kylie Jean to spell, and some of them are really tough!  In the midst of all this, Kylie Jean and her cousin Lucy find a stray kitten and each takes the responsibility of being the kitten’s momma.  After Kylie Jean realizes Ugly Brother doesn’t like the baby kitten she gives Lucy sole responsibility of being the surrogate mother.  But it’s the kitten that helps Kylie Jean with some of her spelling words and ultimately assists her in achieving her goal of being the spelling bee winner.
This eleven chapter book is a great kid’s book.  It is told from the perspective of second grader Kylie Jean so the language is right on target with seven and eight year olds.  It is a very girly book and will appeal to lots of girly-girls with its pink cover and picture of a little brown-haired girl in a pink dress and tiara.  It also teaches children about responsibility, both with the spelling bee and with the kitten.  Kylie Jean has to work hard and spend quite a bit of time studying to win that spelling bee.  The book also shows that studying can be fun as Kylie Jean practices her spelling words on the swing set at the playground, at the grocery store with her mother, and in the garden with her neighbor.  Young girls will love this book and it is also part of a series so there are plenty of other adventures for kids to follow Kylie Jean Carter on!
